CSz 409 Intro to Improvised Shakespeare
Shakespeare is arguably the most important writer in the English language. As a style, it can also be wildly fun to improvise. Learn to play in the genre, not at the genre! No previous Shakespeare experience necessary. In four weeks, we’ll cover physical and vocal choices, language, emotional content, major tropes of the genre, and even a little (fun, easy to digest) history. We'll also put those tools into action! Coached scene work focused on being true to the genre, making strong and appropriate narrative choices, while still being funny, dangerous, and sexy (with our characters, in a safe context.) We'll look at how to use Shakespeare in short-form games, as well as how to perform longform Shakespeare. (Minimum three levels of improv training with CSz or another established improv theatre.)

Taught by CSz Portland Owner/GM Rick Steadman. Rick studied master acting and directing at Shakespeare's Globe in London and with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. He holds degrees in Theatre Arts and History from Gonzaga University. Rick has been a professional actor, improviser, director, teacher, coach, and writer for over 25 years, and is known nationally for his improvised Shakespeare training.
